Howling with laughter here--I love it. I injured my back in college and reacted badly to a pain medication I took just before an engineering final. Essentially, I was completely stoned--they finally got someone to drive me home.

The professor asked me to come to his office later, and (thankfully) told me they'd let me retake the final. Then he showed me the test. I only remember my answer to one question:

Q. If the carbon filaments of an arc lamp are 1/32 inch apart, the arc resistance will be:
A. Because the animals won't listen to Noah.

Thanks--

I also love the earnest initial penciled in attempt by the student to try to work through the problem, before turning the frustration of not being able to solve it into a far more constructive "Elephant Eureka" moment. A total testament to the implausibility and irrelevance of these types of questions anyway... There may as well be an Elephant in every one of these scenarios...

Q: If your Grandma has 15 apples, and she gives 5 of them away, then what time does the zoo close?
A: 5:15pm because the Elephant was busy eating the apples.

These kids deserved better than a 0 for exhibiting parallel and out of the box thinking processes.

In example #2, it's funny how the teacher felt compelled to circle the elephant and underline the word "elephant" to show where the student's "error" was. I think the "0" would have been sufficient...
Having failed many times in life with far less courage, creativity, irreverence and innovation, I applaud these kids. Thanks for the much needed laugh today!
